Art : Padilla
Rarely does synergy between artist and poet creatively enhance both their genres with the
ease conveyed by the unique collaboration between artist Rob Padilla and poet Holly
Parsons.
Two artists, independent creatives, Rob & Holly met and became friends through their affiliation in the Art Alliance of Idyllwild in 2016. It would be almost 10 years before Rob Padilla shared images from his vast body of art.
That his ‘Woman Series’ pairs effortlessly and reflectively with the broad, spacious, sometimes radical social musings found in Parsons Soul of A Woman Trilogy demonstrates the upleveling that art delivers on its terms,
when its time is now.
Excerpts from
The World of Padilla
By William A. Emboden Ph. D. F.L S.
The art of Padilla is as luminous as light refracted from the sea. It inspires in all of his paintings,
but light alone will not hold a work. It is the use of color and composition coupled with the
subject matter that grasps us. His optimal geometry creates for us a world of his own as do
the component elements.
His is indeed a private world much like his isolated home by the sea. It is an hypothesis in that
most artists internalize those things that inspire them, allowing figuration on canvas to
manifest the transformation. The puzzles of Padilla engage us although we know nothing of
the sources or process in realizing these as a finished work of art.
The paintings of Padilla seem to reveal nothing and everything. That is to say they are an
evocation and fragments of memory that challenge us by presenting the differences of
interpretation – as they should. How are we to make associations when we encounter such
diversity?
The joy that pervades Padilla’s life is infectious through his work. In his paintings he reveals
happiness in luminous colors pervaded by light. This is the light derived from his life by the
sea.
Padilla takes us into the realms of artists of the Cubist epoch and the Bauhaus. No, he does
not attempt to copy these artists, but their spiritual values are present. We can not help but
find Kandinsky, Klee and Picasso in the presence of these works in his pictorial extension of
these early 20th century artists. The intensity of colors form bright palettes that distinguishes
his paintings.
